Growing up as a black boy in Nigeria, the impact of colonialism could be felt in the community I was in. I was aware of bleaching cream at a young age and even noticed how it seemed that lighter complexion was “better”. This made me question the skin I was in, as a chocolate complexioned young boy.

Years later, my family moved to America, and in this new context I still found myself trying to scrape the “dirt” off my skin.
In my junior year of high-school, the community of bold black people around me made me appreciate the uniqueness of being black. It was then I began to slowly see that my skin black skin was and is beautiful.

These pieces of art are a representation of the beauty that my inner child would grow to love. I know many of us have gone through a journey of challenging societies perceptions of what is beautiful. I can stand here today confident in who I am as a black man. We’ve always been the cool kids on the block. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Not even yourself.

Man: Ehimare (means God's Choice)
Woman: Esosa (means God's gift)

Chose those names because they represent moments in my life where I realized how valuable I was and being confident in my skin and who God made me to be.

Beautiful print — GALLERY-LIKE QUALITY

Wow. This piece is unreal. The quality is second to none and it commands the room. I find myself looking at it randomly throughout the day, it’s that stunning. I cannot recommend Patricia Barrett Studio enough. Buy yourself a picture, or two, like me. You won’t regret it :)
